Topography, relief, and TRMM-derived rainfall variations along the Himalaya

چکیده
[1] Along the southern Himalayan topographic front, the Indian summer monsoon modulates erosive processes and rates. To investigate the influence of topography and relief on rainfall generation and resultant erosion, we processed satellite rainfall amounts for the last 8 years (1998–2005) from the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM). Based upon a spatial resolution of 5 5 km for the Himalaya, we identify (1) the spatial distribution of rainfall and (2) the large-scale relationships between topography, relief, and rainfall locations. Our results show two distinct rainfall maxima along strike in the Himalaya. The first, outer rainfall peak occurs along the southern margin of the Lesser Himalaya within a narrow band of mean elevation (0.9 ± 0.4 km) and mean relief (1.2 ± 0.2 km). The second, discontinuous, inner band typically occurs along the southern flank of the Greater Himalaya (elevation and relief: both 2.1 ± 0.3 km). Citation: Bookhagen, B., and D. W. Orographic barriers, high-resolution TRMM rainfall, and relief variations along the eastern Andes
[1] Quantifying the degree to which tectonic and erosive processes shape landscapes is key to understanding the evolution of tectonically active mountain belts. Here we explore the interplay of these two processes along the humid, eastern flank of the South American Andes. We use high-resolution Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) and SRTM data to characterize elevation, relief, and hi...
متن کاملAppearance of extreme monsoonal rainfall events and their impact on erosion in the Himalaya
Monsoonal rainfall in the Himalaya dominates erosion and sediment transport through the fluvial system. In addition to the strong seasonal nature of the Indian summer monsoon, striking interannual variations in monsoonal strength characterize longer records. For example, during any given year, rain may penetrate further into the orogen, even though peak rainfall amounts almost always occur at t...
متن کاملErosional variability along the northwest Himalaya
[1] Erosional exhumation and topography in mountain belts are temporally and spatially variable over million year timescales because of changes in both the location of deformation and climate. We investigate spatiotemporal variations in exhumation across a 150 250 km compartment of the NW Himalaya, India. Twenty-four new and 241 previously published apatite and zircon fission track and white mi...

[1] To investigate processes related to the interaction of topography and precipitation, a tropics-wide (±36 latitude) high resolution (0.1 ) ten year (1998–2007) rainfall climatology is presented from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation radar (PR) using algorithm 2A25 version 6 near-surface rain. We observe a tight coupling between precipitation and topography with dis...
متن کاملThe topographic imprint of a transient climate episode: the western Andean flank between 155 and 415S
Mountain-range topography is determined by the complex interplay between tectonics and climate. However, often it is not clear to what extent climate forces topographic evolution and how past climatic episodes are refl ected in present-day relief. The Andes are a tectonically active mountain belt encompassing various climatic zones with pronounced differences in rainfall, erosion, and glacier e...
